Education continuity: evidence of progression

Field-based monitoring over more than a decade has generated practical insight into the relationship between household stability and education continuity.

From 2026, Altervitam will progressively systematise this experience to contribute to discussions on education and adult learning in economically fragile contexts.

Since 2012:

  • Quarterly review of school reports
  • Continued support linked to demonstrated effort

All girls supported since the programme began have either entered higher education or moved into employment.

Several beneficiaries have progressed through transition stages that typically carry higher dropout risk, including the move from primary to secondary and from lower to upper secondary education.

The objective has not been exceptional academic performance, but sustained engagement and steady advancement.

Introduced in 2024, the adult livelihood component supports family providers in developing income-generating activities aligned with their existing skills.

Impact is assessed through:

  • Establishment of functioning income activities
  • Regular follow-up on production and sales
  • Evidence of reinvestment
  • Increased predictability of income over time

Several supported households have reported improved capacity to meet school-related expenses and household needs without interruption.

Conditional link between livelihood and schooling

Livelihood support is conditional on children’s school attendance once income-generating activities are operational.

Family providers commit to ensuring that school-age children in their household are enrolled and remain in school. Follow-up includes verification of attendance and progression.

This condition reinforces the link between household stability and education continuity. It also extends the impact of livelihood support beyond income generation alone.

This replaces the previous “Beyond Direct Beneficiaries” narrative. Now it is not a vague spillover effect. It is a built-in accountability condition.
