Sewing by day, building a poultry business by night

At the young age of 35 and already responsible for four young children, Hanitra has had to juggle two jobs whilst trying to undertake a project to ensure a future for her children. Because educating her children has been a priority to this young mother, she’s been pushed to her wits’ end trying to come up with enough revenue to accomplish this goal. A day job as a seamstress already taking a big toll on this hardworking mother, she’s also had to make time for her side project: chicken breeding. Having noticed that she lived in a prime location to breed chickens, she took her children’s fate into her own hands by working on this back-breaking project. Being in an animal-loving household further encouraged the undertaking of this project. However, Hanitra has faced many obstacles such as not having enough funding to provide adequate care for the chickens. Only making approximately a quarter of her goal, Hanitra is in dire need of a help to be able to provide a future for her children. She currently only makes $55, but with her goal being about $210, all she needs is support from kind and giving hearts. While this may not seem like a lot to our current society, it’s the promise of a future to Hanitra and her children.

Farming against uncertain seasons

Providing for 3 people at 31, Olivier knows the pressure that comes with ensuring a stable future. Hoping to further expand his agricultural project, Olivier lacks $110 to make this dream come true. Having cultivated vast acres of land on his own, he feels the toll of climate change in the unpredictable rainy seasons. With no weather stability, he can’t have stable agricultural revenue. As the harvests all depend on the amount of rainfall, it is crucial for him to find a stables water source, such as a well. Taking care of 8 acres requires a sure and stable water source, which he lacks due to climate change. Using the $110 donation, he would be able to have harvests all year round by creating a well - a long lasting water source. This would allow him to sell in his local farmer’s market, therefore not only bringing fresh and healthy food to the table, but also revenue from selling this. This revenue would help with his family’s other necessary expenses. Climate change being an immense problem the industrial world has created, innocent people that are dependent on the weather to make a living like Olivier, should be helped, as it is not their fault, yet they are the ones suffering.

Crafting a legacy in leather

Trying to keep his father’s legacy alive, Patrick has followed in his footsteps to uphold his heritage of creating artisanal shoes and purses. This creation of art -long revered in Malagasy culture- consists of using the gifts of the land itself to create mesmerizing but useful accessories. Creating purses and shoes from scratch though is hard and requires materials which the 22-year-old determined Patrick lacks. Just $110 away from the sum needed to afford these materials, Patrick is avidly looking for funding to be able to honor his father’s heritage and showcase Malagasy art to the world, making both his parents and his home-country proud. Creating shoes and purses from leather, plants and glue is a long and arduous process which will be greatly aided by the small donation. Creating his own artisanal business would allow him to feed his family in a healthy manner, a concept quite dear to him, having grown up in poverty. This business that Patrick holds dearly to heart would allow him to provide for his family and bring honor to his country and family, two goals he has long dreamed of achieving.

From self-taught seamstress to future trainer

As an ambitious girl in her early twenties, Diary has taken a different vocation to that of all those around her. Being raised in an agricultural village, she chose to instead, become a seamstress, a much-needed job in her village. Feeling the burden of the poverty placed on her family, she made the selfless decision to contribute to the family’s earnings. However, due to the lack of textile related industries in her area, Diary hasn’t been able to gain much experience apart from being self-taught. Always trying to better herself, she’s been looking for funding to be able to gain more education in the textile industry. Her ambitious goal being to have her own boutique and becoming a trainer in the field, she requires more training from a professional, before being able to become one herself. Requiring less than $100 to be able to provide for her family for a long period of time, Diary came to Altervitam in the hopes of receiving help to ensure financial stability for her family. Being a young girl in an agricultural society, Diary stood out by striving for an education and taking a different vocation. To be able to accomplish her dreams and make ends meet, all she needs is a little push.

Starting small to stand on his own

At the age of 24, Lova already felt the toll poverty had on his family. Striving to become independent and not reliant on his mother’s income, Lova’s project to breed chickens is his way of contributing to his family’s financial income. Planning to help his mother and his family, Lova had decided to tackle the task of starting his own project at such a young age. Being a young entrepreneur does have its obstacles though, which is why Lova came to Altervitam to receive funding to kickstart his business. Only having half of his required income to take proper care of his chickens, he needs $50 to be able to start his own life. Working towards his independence, he’s meticulously planned how he’ll handle his revenue to be able to expand his small project and have financial stability. His mom having worked hard to provide for him, he’s aiming to be able to repay her when his little business pays off by taking care of her as she had done for him before.

Turning a family skill into a business

Aina, a barely 20-year-old girl living in the slums of Ambohitrarahaba already has an extensive vision: to have her own soap industry, so large it even exports. However, a big challenge stands in her way: a factory- dominated field is not easy to create a small business in. With many large soap-making factories in her town selling at low and affordable prices, Aina must show clients her product is worth it. Her mother having taught her the art of making soap, Aina not only does it as a living, but also to promote hygiene whilst honoring her mother. Still at its inception stage, the production of soap is done in her house itself. This is, however, harmful, as soap contains sodium lauryl sulphate, a chemical dangerous to inhale constantly in her small and not airy home. A small donation of $125, would allow her not only to feed herself but promote hygiene in her natal town and continue her vocation passed down form her mother without the health disadvantages that come with the production of soap. The expected profit, being approximately 4 times the investment, will provide for her entire family and greatly improve their living conditions. This would change the entire course of her life and of those around them by ameliorating their health and promoting cleanliness.

Working for two generations

Nambinintsoa, a 23-year-old cook with a side business of chicken breeding, has begun to feel the weight of poverty on his family’s shoulder. Through his small chicken breeding business, he plans to bring food on the table and pay for the education for his younger sisters. Having had the responsibility of the family’s chicken’s wellbeing since young, he already knows his way around raising chickens and found this to be the perfect business venture. With free-range chickens being preferred due to their superior quality to mass-produced chickens, their demand has increased over the years. Additionally, this business venture allows him to work at the same time, therefore earning a double income. With the weight of his sisters’ education on his young but hardworking shoulders, he ardently works to make this business successful. Requiring the minimal sum of $110 to stay afloat in this business industry, he’s working hard to be able to receive such a generous donation. Nambinintsoa not only believes this business would be beneficial to his family but also to his clients as free-range chickens have more health benefits and is a less-cruel alternative to mass-chicken production. On this business rests the weight of the education of not only Nambinintsoa but also his little sisters.
